Bob the Tech Audio recently completed this comprehensive Marantz Model 32 restoration. Originally released in the early 1970s, we restored this vintage and rare Model 32 from top to bottom. It’s freshly aligned and has original electrolytic capacitors and stressed parts replaced. This unit should be good to go until the 2070s.
Restoration
We started with the power supply, installing a new fuse holder. The main filter capacitors are brand new parts. Stressed resistors and electrolytic capacitors on the rectifier/relay board are replaced. We cleaned the speaker relay contacts and verified its operation. We removed and replaced the original electrolytic capacitors and a few stressed resistors on the heatsink boards. Diodes, transistors, and other key parts on the heatsinks are verified to be good.
Powering the unit we verified power supply voltages are as specified, and adjusted and verified DC balance and bias in both channels.
Electrical Performance
Electrically the unit operates flawlessly. All power supply voltages are correct. Heatsink bias and DC offset are verified to be as specified. The Model 32 has excellent performance. Distortion is specified at 0.15% and measures 0.03-0.1% from 20Hz – 20kHz at rated output power. The model 32 is rated to 60 Watts per channel. We measured ~70 WPC (2kHz, 120VAC line) before distortion reaches ~1%. The unit sounds great.
Cosmetics
We touched up chassis paint in a few areas where it had chafed off a bit. The new paint looks great. We removed, cleaned, and re-installed the loose front panel bezel and logo. A previous owner had attempted to straighten the bent front panel top right corner, leaving some remaining wrinkles and tool marks in the process. We further straightened the corner and removed the worst of the tool marks. We brushed the finish to blend the reworked area with the original chassis. As some photos show, the beat up corner is more or less noticeable depending on your viewing angle. Finally, we gave the Model 32 a new set of feet.
