Bob the Tech Audio took on this Audio Research LS7 repair with the intent of selling the unit. But it sounds so good we are tempted to keep it in our set up. Think of the LS7 as a simple preamplifier with source selection and volume control, but no tone controls, very simple.
The unit was very dusty inside, but otherwise in very good shape. The front panel Mute switch was snapped off so we replaced both switches with a matching pair to be sure of a clean look. The controls needed a cleaning but are now smooth and static free. A new set of tubes and this unit looks and sounds beautiful.
I had the pleasure of listening to this unit with a newly repaired Mcintosh MC275-IV all tube power amplifier. The two sounded so good together. As an all tube signal path, this combination just sounds smooth and creamy to me. I’ve been trying to figure out which preamplifier to hang on to in my setup. I currently have this Audio Research LS7 running. But I also just completed repair on a beautiful McIntosh C712. Both are nice, simple, low profile preamplifiers. It’s going to be difficult to decide which to keep. But keep your eyes open on our Buy/Sell/Trade page as the other one will be available soon!
If you have vintage Audio Research equipment like this LS7, or any other fine audio, that needs repair contact Bob the Tech Audio for your service needs.
