At Bob the Tech Audio we take pride in providing professional quality workmanship for your McIntosh repair. Some other shops have lower standards. This gallery depicts what you do NOT want to see in the work from your service provider. You will NOT see this type of work from Bob the Tech Audio.
At Bob the Tech Audio we have a large documentation and component data sheet library, and maintain a parts cross reference database so that we can use exact replacements or equivalent parts in our work. We use quality hand tools such as Velleman soldering irons, AMP crimp tools, and Bausch and Lomb microscopes to perform our rework. Our work is always complete and clean. We perform thorough functional and performance checks to ensure proper operation. Whether vintage or modern, we have the right tools and technology to maintain your fine equipment properly. McIntosh MAC4280 Input Select Wiring Error
Previous rework at this connector reversed the TUNER and PH input select control wires. The result is that the front panel input select control acts erratically. Clockwise rotation of the control selects inputs in a clockwise fashion as expected until the step to PH. At this point the front panel indicator crosses over and selects TUNER instead. The next clockwise rotation then crosses back over and selects PH. From there the next step crosses back over to T1. Rework like this also prevents removing the connector to remove the board, or any further rework to the connector. A better solution is to replace the connector with a modern 11 pin version to ensure continued maintainability of the unit.
C15 with Custom Op-Amp Dislodged
A lot of people like to try to upgrade older amplifiers with new, lower noise / better performing circuits. But the installation of this custom operational amplifier could have been better. The complaint was no output from the unit. When covers were removed, it was evident that the custom amp that had been installed in this unit had broken its moorings and become dislodged from the socket. The picture at left illustrates what was found. The picture at right shows the self-adhesive tape that was used to install the device. We pulled the custom amplifier and reinstalled a factory-recommended device.
MC2100 with incorrect parts
This MC2100 recently received by our shop is an example of what you might find from other shops. The replacement part is too small for the mounting hole, and is also the incorrect value. At Bob the Tech Audio we use appropriate replacement parts in all of our work.
MC352 with poor workmanship
The complaint with this MC352 was that it cut out, intermittent audio. When we pulled the heatsinks we found that the power transistor leads were just laying on the pads. This wasn’t the only issue with the heatsink, but you can see how this would cause intermittent performance. We pride ourselves on our professional quality workmanship for your McIntosh repair. Our joints are always clean. Full functional and performance checks ensure performance before we return your unit to you.
