McIntosh MC2301 Amplifier under test after repair by Bob the Tech Audio

McIntosh MC2301 Repairs

Bob the Tech recently had a pair of McIntosh MC2301 amplifiers in for repairs. We had the issues isolated, repaired, and the unit running in no time.

This was an interesting one, a bit of a chicken and egg story. Either a resistor failed (left) causing a tube to fail, or more likely a tube failed and damaged the resistor as a result. But either way, in an attempt to replace suspect tubes and get the unit running, the customer swapped tubes around and unfortunately ended up damaging more tubes by placing them in sockets with bad resistors, and more resistors by moving bad tubes around to different sockets.

Bob the Tech isolated all of the damaged grid resistors (above left) and replaced them (at right). We tested all of the tubes, discarding the bad ones. After sorting out the tubes we had the units running in no time.
